Aloha Hui Members! As Iulai comes to a close, we want to reflect and acknowledge the hard work of all of those who have contributed to a spectacular summer here in Hāʻena. The Kauwela Keiki Summer Program and Hāʻena Biocultural Internship have now come to a close. The staff, partners, and collaborators at the Hui Mākaʻāinana o Makana are grateful for the time spent with our youth, having taken the time to educate them in the Hāʻena ahupuaʻa. This summer also brought community members from all across Kauaʻi and beyond to our loʻi complex system to enjoy time getting their hands dirty and fostering pilina. Mahalo nui loa for being a part of our Hui and for your continued support and involvement! |

End of Summer Program
Iulai 2024
As the summer comes to a close, we are proud to celebrate the successful completion of two incredible programs: the Kauwela Keiki Summer Program and the Hāʻena Biocultural Internship. These programs are a collaborative effort between the Hui Mākaʻāinana o Makana and NTBG Limahuli Gardens and Preserve.
We want to extend a heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff and community partners, including the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), Na Māka Onaona, and the Waipā Foundation for their partnership this summer. With their participation, the interns were able to explore the cultural and natural landscape of Hāʻena, as well as other landscapes across Kauaʻi, fostering a deep appreciation and understanding of ʻāina momona.
The keiki hoʻike hosted on 11 Iulai 2024 was a beautiful gathering of families, where our youth shared the space they spent the summer thriving in. Food was shared, stories were told, and the keiki showcased some of the activities they participated in.
On 17 Iulai 2024, the interns took center stage for their own hoʻike, showcasing their summer projects. These projects, rooted in the Ka'ao framework, displayed their journey throughout their internship, expressing their growth and knowledge gained. The interns used various mediums to present their work including PowerPoint presentations, videos, and scrapbooking. By allowing them to utilize their own creative interpretations, they communicated their appreciation to those who helped them on their journey through personal reflection.
We are incredibly proud of the accomplishments of all of our youth and look forward to seeing how they continue to build upon these experiences in the future. Mahalo nui loa to everyone who made these programs possible!

Hawaii Conservation Conference
29 Iulai - 02 ʻAukake 2024
In the last week of Iulai, our Hui had the incredible opportunity to bring several staff members and interns to the Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference. This gathering brought together passionate individuals and organizations from across Hawaiʻi and beyond, creating a space for us to share and learn about the work being done for our natural resources.
During our time on Oʻahu, we visited our friends at Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi, who welcomed us into their space to learn about their organization and experience their beautiful ʻāina. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to talk story and share with each other our mission and goals, reminding us of the shared values and vision that lead our work.
A special highlight of our trip was being honored alongside four other North Shore initiatives from Kauai, the Waipā Foundation, Waiʻoli Taro Farmers, NTBG Limahuli Garden and Preserve, and the Hanalei Initiative, by the Alakaʻina Foundation. The Alakaʻina Foundation acknowledged our collective efforts for our communities, and we are deeply humbled to have been recognized alongside fellow community members and organizations.
Mahalo to everyone who made this experience possible, and to all those who continue to support our Hui!
